Here you can see some of the best terminal emulators available, along with many of the most impressive features. Many experienced Linux users already have their own preferred command line terminal emulator. Unfortunately most users are unaware of the number of terminal emulators are actually available. There are several standard terminals, and some with more complex features.
Users that are unfamiliar with the variety of choices may find little difference between one emulator and another. You might want a lightweight and generally featureless terminal. You might even want one that is feature filled, this is for power users. Some of the most advanced terminals will let you partition the main window, or at least use multiple tabs. A quake style drop- down terminal seems to be quite popular for everyday users.
Terminator is one of the most powerful and popular terminal emulators available for Linux today. Users may have multiple tabs open at the same time with customizable shapes and sizes to fit your needs. This terminal emulator is highly configurable and fun to use. Users can even launch Terminator from the command line for additional functionality, like no window borders. This is the terminal of choice for many Linux users.
Tilda offers a stylish drop-down terminal that resembles the Quake chat window. You can quickly launch or hide Tilda with a single key press. Tilda does seem to offer more customization options than similar drop-down style terminals.
This is a terminal emulator designed for KDE. Konsole has many of the standard features including profiles, appearance customization and multiple tabs. Konsole even offers excellent mouse support. With Konsole you can also split the main window much like terminator. This terminal emulator does offer a large number of options scattered through the menu and several different settings windows.
Another top quality drop-down terminal emulator that is based on KDE Konsole. The drop down display functions with multiple tabs which many users prefer over similar editors like Tilda. Yakuake has many useful keyboard shortcuts that will certainly increase your productivity. This terminal emulator does lack several common preferences in my opinion.
This is another drop-down style terminal emulator that is similar to Tilda or Yakuake. Guake unfortunately is slightly less known and not as widely used. Again customizable color schemes are available. You can customize the terminal font, or font size. Even customize your own convenient keyboard shortcuts. Guake is growing in stability every day and still offers a stylish command line interface. The Guake terminal emulator also offers transparency, background colors, and background image options.
After sampling several of the available choices I have finally narrowed the selection. Hopefully some of you will feel the same. Currently my favorite terminal emulator is likely Terminator for its functionality, or Tilda for its drop-down display. But you can decide for yourself which Linux terminal is best, they each offer their own unique features.
