Sorry everyone, we are still experimenting with the new theme. Somehow we managed to break the Disqus commenting system. Disqus will now be disabled until we are able to correct the theme.

Back up, rumor suggests Mint may part from Ubuntu and do their own thing from the Debian sources I suspect. With the numbers for Mint and Mageia steadily climbing, and the stability and quality Ubuntu steadily falling, I foresee a bleak future. Ubuntu may still be used on more systems, but less people are installing it with every passing release.

My understanding is that Ubuntu is currently the leading the Linux OS. Unless you are referring to Mint spin of it versus the standard release. In that, the standard release will never be on top again. The spins will always dominate. Also, do I think Mint will always dominate? No, not at all.

Using market leading Mint. How does it compare to the market leader (instead of the 600+_ market losers).
Firefox etc are true open source, but not my choice of internet browser. Google Chrome, with add-ons, integrates well with other Googles (Android, Maps, gMail, etc), but I prefer Opera Internet browser on most of my operating systems.
Kubuntu has a turnoff, as you noted: KDE's inferior apps(BOATWARE!!), compared to open-market apps. The only + point is that it is a 'buntu respin, trying to be KDE interface better than other KDE operating systems, like OpenSuSe.

Hey claudecat, thanks for the comment, any feedback is very much appreciated! You summed things up perfectly. Those were some of the things that I forgot to mention, but surely there are more. Does anyone here think Ubuntu will one day be back on top?

I found Kubuntu 12.10 to be an improvement upon 12.04; such is NOT the case for Ubuntu itself. I'd prefer that Firefox was installed by default (it's no longer a CD sized ISO after all), but the menu link is a step in the right direction. I'd also include more of the KDE games by default and the VLC media player. Overall it's quite stable and seems to be faster than all previous versions - again unlike Ubuntu proper.
