Mozilla Firefox offers several preferences and options with will help you with your daily web browsing needs. You can customize your browser in many ways, or you can enhance your security which is a primary concern these days.
Popular Options
When first using Mozilla Firefox you should set the homepage which will appear every time you start Firefox, or you can change the default directory used to save files. You can also empty your history so people cannot trace your footsteps.
The following options are available inside the Mozilla Firefox general preferences tab.
When Firefox Starts
You you choose to start the homepage that you choose when you start Mozilla Firefox, you can show a blank page, or you can show your windows and tabs from last time.
Homepage
Use the text field to add your custom homepage.
Show The Downloads Window When Downloading A File
You can toggle the display of the downloads window on or off with this option.
Close Window When All Downloads Are Finished
If you choose to display the downloads window you can also toggle this option to close the window when all of your downloads are finished.
Save Files To
Here you can choose a directory to store your downloads.
Always Ask Me Where To Save Files
When you toggle this option you will be prompted for a location every time you choose to download files.
Change Preferences For Your Add-ons
Use this to open the Mozilla Firefox add-ons window.
The next tab in the Mozilla Firefox preferences window will contain all of your tab preferences. The options seen below are available.
Open New Windows In A New Tab Instead
You can choose to open locations in a new tab or in a new window.
Warn Me When Closing Multiple Tabs
You will be prompted when closing multiple tab when you toggle this option.
Warn Me When Opening Multiple Tabs Might Slow Down Firefox
You will be prompted when you are about to open multiple windows and it might slow down Mozilla Firefox.
Always Show The Tab Bar
The tab toolbar will always be displayed.
When I Open A Link In A New Tab Switch To It Immediately
New tabs will automatically be brought to the front when you toggle this option.
Next is the content preferences window, you will find the options below.
Block Pop-up Windows
Here you can add addresses to the list of websites which will block all pop-up windows.
Load Images Automatically
You can also add addresses to a list of web pages which are allowed to load images automatically.
Enable JavaScript
Here you can toggle the use of JavaScript in web pages on or off, there is also a button to reach the advanced JavaScript settings window.
Default Font
Use this to select a single default font and font size for web pages, font colors can also be changed. There is also a button to reach the advanced font settings window
Choose Your Preferred Language For Displaying Pages
If websites are available in more than one language they will use the language you select.
The applications preferences tab contains only one option.
Content Types
From the application preferences tab you can manage file type associations, and the corresponding actions or plug-ins used for that file type.
Next is the privacy preferences tab, use this to browse and clear your history.
History
Your history settings can also be changed, Mozilla Firefox will remember your history, never remember your history, or you can choose custom history settings.
Clear Your Recent History
If you want to you can manually clear your recent history with this option.
Remove Individual Cookies
You can also select or search for individual cookies to remove with this option.
Location Bar
When you are using the location bar you can have your Mozilla Firefox automatically suggest history items and bookmarks, just history, just bookmarks, or nothing at all.
Change your security settings using the options found below.
Warn Me When Sites Try To Install Add-ons
When this option is toggled you will be warned when a site is trying to install add-ons.
Block Reported Attack Sites
Toggle this option to block reported attack sites.
Block Reported Web Forgeries
Toggle this option to block reported fake sites.
Remember Passwords For Sites
Toggle this option to remember all passwords used for sites on the exceptions list.
Use Master Password
You can toggle the use of a master password for all websites, and you can set your password from here.
Choose Which Warning Messages You Want To See While Browsing The Web
This will open a window where you can toggle which messages you would like displayed when browsing,, several options are available.
The final tab is for your advanced preferences which can be seen below.
Always Use The Cursor Keys To Navigate Within Pages
When this option is toggled you can use the keyboard arrow keys to navigate through web pages like a text document rather than a traditional browser, line by line not page by page.
Search For Text When I Start Typing
The search bar will automatically start searching for text when typing if you are not typing inside a text field.
Warn Me When Web Sites Try To Redirect Or Reload The Page
If this option is toggled on you will be prompted when a website tries to automatically reload or redirect you to a different web page.
Use Auto Scrolling
You can toggle the auto-scrolling feature on or off.
Use Smooth Scrolling
This will enable smooth scrolling rather than page by page scrolling.
Check My Spelling As I Type
Mozilla Firefox even has a built in spell checker which you can enable here.
Always Check To See If Firefox Is The Default Browser On Startup
This will enable a startup message that will ask you if you want to make Firefox your default browser.
Submit Crash Reports
You can also toggle crash reporting to Mozilla Firefox on or off.
Configure How Firefox Connects To The Internet
This will open the Mozilla Firefox connection options window.
Use Up To X MB Of Space For The Cache
Set amount of disk space in Megabytes that you would like to use for cache storage.
Tell Me When A Website Asks To Store Data For Offline Use
When this option is toggled you will be prompted when a website tries to store cookies. You can also manage a list of website which are automatically blocked from storing cookies.
Automatically Check For Updates To
You can toggle the automatic installation of new updates to add-ons or search engines.
Use SSL 3.0
Toggle the use of SSL encryption with this option.
Use TSL 1.0
Toggle the use of TSL encryption with this option.
When A Server Requests My Personal Certificate
You can choose to select one automatically or to be prompted every time.
View Certificates
This will open a new window where you can import, export and manage your certificates.
Revocation List
Here you can manage a certificate revocation list.
Validation
This button will open another window where you can toggle several certificate validation options.
Security Devices
Use this to open a new window where you can manage a list of security modules and devices.
