Ubuntu Installation
To install VLC on any Ubuntu system you can simply use the commands below.
$ sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-pulse mozilla-plugin-vlc
Debian Installation
Users can install the VLC media player on any Ubuntu system the few commands below.
Update Sources
First you can add the repositories to your sources list which is located in the following directory.
/etc/apt/sources.list
VLC Sources
The following repositories should add to your sources list.
deb http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/debian sid main deb-src http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/debian sid main
Update Packages
Next update your packages list so you can begin installation.
# apt-get update
Install VLC
Now simply install VLC with the commands below.
# apt-get install vlc libdvdcss2
The VLC media player window is extremely easy to navigate. Here is a closer look at the components of the main window.
Menu Bar
The menu bar of course is located at the top of the VLC media player window. Use the menus to interact with the VLC media player and see all of the available options.
Display Area
This area takes up most of the main window, this is where all of your videos will be displayed.
Playback Controls
Use the playback controls at the bottom left of the VLC media player window to control your videos. You can play, stop, and pause your videos at any time. Several other options are also available such as skipping to the next or previous track.
Volume Controls
The volume control buttons are located at the bottom right of the main window. Use these buttons to control the volume output of your videos.
The VLC media player also holds numerous features that will help you interact with audio files, here are a few of the available actions.
Play Audio Track
To begin playing an audio track you will first need to open the desired track which can be done from the media menu. Next simply select the track and press the play button inside the playback toolbar.
Recording Audio
That's right, the VLC media player can also record audio at any time. Simply press the record button which can be toggled on from the view menu.
Audio Devices
Users can also choose stereo or mono modes for audio playback based on the available audio devices. Use these settings to get the highest sound quality out of your system.
Audio Channels
If you are playing your audio using stereo mode you can also change the volume of the left and right audio channels.
Audio Visualization Mode
You can also enable cool visual effects that will compliment your audio tracks nicely. Just have a look in the audio menu.
The VLC media player also has fantastic support for various popular video formats.
Subtitles
VLC can also support video sub titles providing they are properly encoded and in the right format.
Fullscreen Mode
From the video menu users can also toggle full screen mode which will allow you to watch your videos without seeing any window decorations or toolbars.
Zoom Videos
Users are also able to zoom in on playing videos which is a rather unique feature.
