Watching Linux Evolve
Although this release became available quite a long time ago I still wanted to cover all the changes. So here is a look at some of the most important changes for those who are interested.
Most Important Changes
Personally I like to keep up with all the major changes because there are often several key features that go unnoticed.
It may seem hard to imagine but the Xfdesktop has only recently acquired many key features.
Desktop Icon Updates
The Xfce 4.6 updates allow users to select multiple icons on the desktop and control them all together.
Desktop Menu Updates
The highly efficient desktop menu was only recently introduced which actually surprised me. Right clicking on the desktop will allow you to control your files, access your applications and settings, or logout of the desktop.
The panel has also seen a few minor updates as you will see. There have been many small bug fixes made to the Xfce 4 panel, so things are working better than ever.
New Panel Plugins
Be sure to also look for some of the newly available panel plugins as well.
The session manager has also been improved offering increased speeds, easier configuration, and support for auto launching required desktop applications that happen to crash.
Improved Logout Dialog
The logout dialog has also been updated, it will now offer users the the ability to suspend or hibernate their system.
More bug fixes for Xfwm4 and improved multi-monitor support has also been introduced. Xfwm4 will also detect window that become unresponsive, a dialog will be displayed asking to terminate the frozen application.
Window Actions Menu
A new actions menu has been added allowing control for many of your open windows. Right click on a window title bar to see the available actions. You can move or resize windows quickly from this menu.
Window Manager Tweaks
The window manager tweak settings dialog has also been added allowing for much more control over the window manager.
Many features have also been added for the Thunar file manager. I was shocked to see mouse navigation inside the Thunar window has only recently been added.
Themeable Directories
You can now customize the look and layout for each directory. This is done using the XDG user directories specified by Freedesktop.org.
The settings manager for Xfce now has an enhanced interface that offers many useful settings. Many of your desktop settings are easily accessible from one single locations.
Desktop And Display Settings
You can now set a custom wallpaper for each of your connected displays. You can also change the resolution and many other settings.
The whole Xfce 4 mixer has been redesigned and will now use Gestreamer. The interface has been improved also.
Application Finder Updates
The applications finder for the Xfce desktop has also been upgraded. Users can now drag items from the application launcher to the panel or the desktop.
